Which Smart Warehouse System Is Right for You? A Guide to Choosing Based on Your Needs

ICAM SILO² Vertical Storage Elevator Installation: An Example of a Smart Storage System

Six products, one question: Which one is right for your warehouse? This guide helps you make decisions based on your needs, not just the product name. First, identify the materials you store; then, identify your main challenge—the chart will direct you to the right ICAM system.

Step 1: What are you storing?

Material typeSuitable systemWhy
Small and medium-sized parts (mold components, cutting tools, replacement parts, electronic components, fasteners)SILO² Vertical Storage ElevatorThe trays are arranged closely together vertically; thousands of items can be accessed within seconds in a confined space.
Pallets, reels, boxes, bulk materials; you have existing shelvesCompatta Mobile Shelving SystemIt moves existing pallet and cantilever racks onto mobile bases; the aisle space is converted into storage space.
Profiles, pipes, rods (up to 6.6 m), medium volumeMaxi LDrawer tower; the elevator brings the drawer up, reducing the need for a forklift.
Long material (7 m), 400+ load units, continuous movementMaxi STCFully automatic AS/RS with a stacking crane; two load units at the same time.
Sheet metal, panel, glass, plateMaxi T3-metric-ton sheet metal drawers; they operate in conjunction with the laser cutting line.
Tools, consumables, personal equipmentSafe Box24/7 delivery to authorized users; no more stock shortages.

Step 2: What is your main problem?

“I’ve run out of storage space, and I don’t want to build a new hallway.”

If your ceiling height is over 4 meters, vertical systems (SILO², Maxi L, Maxi T) reduce floor space by up to 90 percent. If the ceiling is low and you already have shelving, mobile shelving aisles can be converted into storage areas to achieve the same result horizontally.

“We’re wasting time looking for parts, and there are too many assembly errors.”

If the issue is about speed and accuracy, the answer is SILO²: the part is delivered to the operator, the software indicates the correct tray and bin, and every movement is recorded.

“The teams are disappearing; it’s not clear who has them.”

This isn’t a storage issue—it’s a distribution and accountability issue. Safe Box dispenses materials only to authorized users; it tracks who took what, when, and when it was returned. The benefits become apparent within the first month in shift-based production and maintenance workshops.

“Forklift traffic is dangerous and slow when handling long materials and sheet metal”

Maxi L or Maxi STC for profiles and pipes, and Maxi T for sheets. All three keep the material in the enclosed tower and transport it to the station; the forklift operates only at the station.

“I have more than one problem”

This is the standard setup. A typical mold shop configuration: SILO² (mold components and cutting tools) + Safe Box (consumables) + Maxi L (mold steel and profiles). A typical sheet metal processing facility: Maxi T (sheet metal) + Compatta (semi-finished products on pallets). During the site survey, the facility is planned as a whole.

Step 3: Make a data-driven decision

  • Ceiling height and floor load capacity: These factors determine the capacity of vertical systems; the capacity nearly doubles between 6 m and 10 m.
  • Number of references and daily collection volume: This determines whether a dual-window system or a second unit is needed.
  • Load size and weight: The tray (400 kg), drawer (1–3 metric tons), or pallet determines the class.
  • Existing software: ERP/WMS integration is planned during the project planning phase.
  • Service distance: The system will operate for many years; it is important that the installation team be local.
