A mobile racking system is a storage configuration in which the racks are mounted on mobile bases that slide along rails, and the aisle opens only where needed. In a traditional warehouse, approximately half of the floor space is taken up by aisles; with mobile racking, a single aisle is sufficient for the entire block. As a result, storage capacity in the same space increases by up to 80 percent, or the same inventory can fit into a much smaller area.
How does a mobile shelving system work?
Rails are installed either embedded in the floor or mounted above it; the shelves rest on steel platforms that move along these rails. The operator selects which aisle to open using a button on the control unit, a remote control, or the warehouse software; the platforms slide using electric motors, creating an aisle in front of the desired shelf. Before the system opens, photoelectric sensors check whether there are any people or vehicles in the aisle.
ICAM Compatta applies this principle to heavy and bulky loads. Its most significant feature is that it works regardless of the type of racking: pallet racks, cantilever racks, and other racking systems can be mounted on mobile bases. In other words, you can transform a stationary warehouse into a mobile one without having to discard your existing racks.
What materials is it suitable for?
Boxes, coils, small parts, profiles, rolls, spools, and bulk materials—whether palletized or not. It can be used not only at normal temperatures but also in cold storage facilities; since the volume to be cooled is reduced, energy consumption decreases significantly. For this reason, it is frequently used in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical warehouses.
Compatta's Technical Specifications
- Corrosion protection: Sendzimir galvanized coating; long service life in harsh environments.
- Rails: Burbach A45 guide rails; low wear under heavy loads.
- Compatibility: Can be integrated with any new or existing shelving system.
- Automation: Ready for AGV (automated guided vehicle) integration.
- Safety: Safety equipment that protects both the material and the operator; safe operating procedures even during an earthquake.
- Controls: On-unit buttons, remote control, ERP/WMS integration; 10-inch operator panel with a Windows-based web interface.
A mobile rack or a vertical storage elevator?
The two systems address different challenges. If your parts are small to medium in size, you have a large number of SKUs, and picking speed is a priority, the vertical storage elevator (SILO²) is the right choice. If your loads are heavy and bulky—such as pallets, coils, or long profiles—and you already have shelving, and your main concern is the space required for aisles, then a mobile shelving system is more cost-effective. In many facilities, both systems are used together: Compatta for raw materials and pallets, and SILO² for small parts and kits.
Factors to Consider When Making an Investment Decision
- Ground: The levelness and load-bearing capacity of the ground are measured for rail installation; groundwork is planned for embedded rails.
- Access frequency: A single corridor provides access to one zone at a time; if there is very heavy traffic, the block is divided into two.
- Fire and Sprinkler Systems: The existing fire protection system is reviewed based on shelf movement.
- Forklift traffic: Aisle width is determined based on the type of forklift used.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use my existing shelves?
Yes. Compatta transfers your existing pallet and console racks to mobile bases; you don’t need to buy new racks.
Will it work in a cold storage facility?
Yes. Since the volume being cooled is smaller, the energy cost also decreases; the system is suitable for cold-room conditions.
What happens if the power goes out?
The system remains in its current position; the open corridor remains open. The emergency procedure and the option for manual operation, if necessary, are planned together during installation.
